HydGene Renewables’ fermentation facility is now certified to Physical Containment Level 2 (PC2) by the Australian Office of the Gene Technology Regulator (OGTR) – a key milestone enabling HydGene to manufacture our biocatalyst at scale.

With this new in-house 250L biomanufacturing capability, HydGene can generate sufficient biocatalyst to support field deployment of our carbon-negative hydrogen technology. This milestone marks the start of delivering on our commercial pipeline to supply biocatalyst to the chemicals and agricultural sectors.

Commissioning the 250L fermenter is especially significant thanks to our breakthrough in biocatalyst stabilisation. A single batch of our catalyst delivers years of hydrogen production – a single 250L batch is equivalent to ~150,000L of conventional fermentation capacity.

The certification of our new 250L facility is more than just a compliance milestone – it represents a step change in HydGene’s ability to deliver at scale,” said Dr Kerstin Petroll, CTO of HydGene Renewables. “Our stabilised biocatalyst platform allows us to produce chemicals with very little biocatalyst, grown in bioreactors that are readily available today. This innovative approach to biomanufacturing and biocatalysis represents a major cost advantage and allows us to compete in low-value, high-volume commodity markets such as hydrogen and ammonia.

This achievement marks another important step forward in HydGene’s mission to provide decentralised, bio-based solutions that accelerate the global transition to sustainable chemicals and fuels.
