The Role

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Research and Applied Scientist with expertise in encapsulation of bacterial cells, particularly alginate. The successful candidate will play a key role in advancing our research and development efforts in the field of bacterial encapsulation for various applications in biotechnology.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Encapsulation: Design and optimise protocols for the encapsulation of bacterial cells, focusing on alginate hydrogels.

  • Cell Viability and Stability: Evaluate the viability and stability of encapsulated bacterial cells under different conditions, ensuring the maintenance of cell functionality.

  • Material Characterisation: Conduct thorough material characterisation studies on hydrogels to assess their physical and chemical properties.

  • Innovative Research: Stay abreast of the latest developments in cell encapsulation technologies and contribute to the development of innovative approaches.

  • Collaboration: Work collaboratively with cross-functional teams, including synthetic biologists, and engineers to integrate encapsulation technologies into broader projects.

Essential Criteria

  • Educational Qualifications: Degree in Microbiology, Biotechnology, Chemical Engineering, or a related field.

  • Experience: Extensive knowledge of biomaterials and experience in the encapsulation of bacterial cells in hydrogels, with a focus on alginate. Hands-on experience in a research or industry setting.

  • Research Skills: Background in experimental design, execution, and data analysis related to bacterial encapsulation. Some polymer chemistry experience, preferably with producing hydrogels.

  • Material Science: Knowledge of hydrogel materials, particularly alginate, and their interactions with bacterial cells.

  • Analytical Techniques: Proficiency in using a variety of analytical techniques, including microscopy, for the characterisation of encapsulated systems.

  • Innovation: Demonstrated ability to contribute innovative ideas to solve complex problems in bacterial cell encapsulation.

Desirable Criteria

  • Collaboration Skills: Experience collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and external research partners.

  • Regulatory Knowledge: Familiarity with regulatory requirements.

  • Industry Experience: Previous experience working in an industry setting, particularly in the development of products related to bacterial encapsulation.
