HydGene Renewables recently participated, as a select group of Australian hydrogen SMEs, in the Australian Hydrogen Council led regional ‘Hydrogen Deep Dive’ Workshop, held in Newcastle on May 20th. As part of the federal government sponsored Industry Growth Program program, and supported by the Department of Industry, Science and Resources (DISR), the workshop brought together early-stage companies to connect with local industry, explore hydrogen opportunities in regional NSW, and better understand available support pathways.

Held in Newcastle, the workshop focused on practical insights into hydrogen deployment, connecting SMEs with industry leaders, infrastructure providers, and regional support organisations. Speakers included Orica, the Port of Newcastle, the University of Newcastle’s Trailblazer for Recycling and Clean Energy (TRACE), and HunterNet Co-operative as well as sessions led by local startups. Discussions explored the emerging hydrogen value chain, from production and logistics to innovation programs and workforce development.

HydGene contributed to the SME showcase, highlighting how its focus aligns with the Hunter’s regional priorities -particularly the need for flexible hydrogen solutions that integrate with existing industrial operations and infrastructure. The event reinforced the region’s strengths, including an active industrial base, established ammonia infrastructure, emerging export pathways, and deep academic expertise -all of which intersect with HydGene’s goal of decarbonising hard-to-abate sectors such as manufacturing, transport, and agriculture.

HydGene wishes to thank the AHC, DISR, HunterNet and all involved in organising the workshop, and will continue working with stakeholders across the Hunter as regional hydrogen opportunities take shape.
